Laura Theurich (*1999) lives and works in Dresden. Since 2019, she has been studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, currently in the class of Alicja Kwade. From 2024 to 2025, she studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in the sculpture department of Simon Dybbroe Møller.
Working across sculpture and photography, Theurich’s artistic practice investigates social constellations, collective agreements, and societal structures, as well as the fundamental fears embedded within them. Central to her work are questions of power and agency: How do relations of power manifest themselves in public space? At what point does protection shift into control or threat?
Her works originate from everyday objects that are abstracted and transferred into unfamiliar contexts. She is particularly interested in glass as a material that simultaneously embodies transparency and fragility. Glass enables visibility while resisting touch; it protects and, at the same time, can become a source of danger. This ambivalence forms the central tension within her practice.
By placing familiar objects into altered situations, Theurich disrupts habitual modes of perception and destabilizes established visual patterns. Surfaces become not only visible but almost physically tangible. Within this displacement, a latent tension emerges: something appears on the verge of happening or to have only just been prevented. It remains unclear whether the threat emanates from the object itself or whether the object serves as protection. Formally reduced and quiet, her works engage subtly with themes of violence, fear, and control. The contrast between aesthetic clarity and psychological unease shifts perception and reveals hidden mechanisms of projection, vulnerability, and social conditioning.
